Fair Trade Morning Perk: Fairtrade Fortnight Begins

Published February 23, 2009 @ 07:18AM PT

Today is the 23rd of February marking the first day of Fairtrade Fortnight in the UK. Festivities began on Sunday the 22nd with the launch event happening at London's South Bank. It was a family sports day with Team Fairtrade in the lead. I am still anxiously awaiting a full report back of the event, because I know that last year's event was great fun that involved dancing bananas.

For those participating in the event, you can share your stories with the Fairtrade Foundation. Directions on how to document are here, including the address for the Foundation's Flickr and YouTube pages. For those on the twitter, the hashtag for the event is #ftf2009 so be sure to include those in your tweets so we can all follow along. Speaking of twitter, you can follow the Fairtrade Foundation at @FairtradeUK.

I'm particularly interested in the speaking events that will be taking place during the two weeks of Fairtrade Fortnight called the Great Trade Debate. Topics include:

  • Is trade justice a lost cause?
  • Can Fair Trade transform global trade?
  • Can trade be both free and fair?
  • Can your shopping basket change the world?
  • Can we have it all? Creating an economy for people and planet

I really can't wait to hear about these speaking events. You all know how I feel about conferences.

So, for those who are able to be in the UK for the next two weeks, enjoy the Fortnight events and be sure to report back to the rest of us. Oh yeah, and break that banana record.
