Fair Trade Morning Perk: Fairtrade Fortnight
Published January 27, 2009 @ 05:35AM PT

Is anyone going to be in the UK from the 23rd of February to the 8th of March this year? If so, I'm a little bit jealous because you'll be around to check out Fairtrade Fortnight.
Fairtrade Fortnight (that's 14 days for those counting) starts on February 23 and goes until March 8th and it is organized by the Fairtrade Foundation to celebrate and raise awareness of 'the people's movement for positive change' through trade justice. Check out the site for a list of events, a banana campaign, producer partner tours, speaking events and various resources surrounding these two weeks of Fairtrade celebration.
One interesting event/campaign is their 'Ready, Set, Go Fairtrade' Launch event on the 22nd of February in London. They'll be kicking off Fortnight with sports-y games to prepare for the Olympics in 2012. It will be a chance to kick around soccer, er, footballs with atheletes and peel Fairtrade bananas with celebrities. It will serve as a catalyst to the campaign to get as many Fairtrade products as possible to be used in the 2012 Olympics. A powerful message to all of UK and the rest of the world of the people's commitment to the movement.
To see a taste of what I will be missing, check out a video of last year's Fairtrade Fortnight Launch event. Let's just sayyyy....dancing bananas.

Things are definitely getting exciting in the lead up to Fairtrade Fortnight.
I've started to read a few newspaper reports about schools taking part in the Banana Eating world record attempt. It's great to have these sorts of events as talking points to get the word out about Fairtrade. At Cafédirect, orders have been coming in, and we've started to send out our Fairtrade Fortnight Toolkits.
