Fair Trade Morning Perk: Ballston Spa, NY Declared the Ninth Fair Trade Town

Published January 14, 2009 @ 07:39AM PT

The state of New York now has its first Fair Trade town within it's borders. Ballston Spa, NY, aside from being the birthplace of the man that created baseball, it can now proudly call itself a Fair Trade Town.

Fair Trade Towns are initiatives brought about by local and grassroots efforts in towns across the United States (and the world) to grow the Fair Trade movement. It means that Fair Trade items are readily available throughout the town -- sold at shops and served at different institutions -- and there are strong educational efforts to inform the public about the Fair Trade movement.

Community member, Jilly Lyons had this to say about the exciting announcement:

It's awesome. I think Ballston Spa has been pretty up and coming, and this is a great way we've distinguished ourselves from Saratoga. We can be a tiny little town, and still generate some interest, saying, 'Hey, what's that you're doing there?' And hopefully, some will follow in our footsteps.

Follow in their footsteps and start thinking about making your own town a Fair Trade Town. Start your own initiative today.
